Golden Cattle Dogs and Children

One must keep in mind, however, what this breed was developed for in deciding whether or not to bring an GCD into a home with children (or where children are in the future plans).

The rough-and-tumble, energetic nature of this breed makes them an excellent "kids dog" but both dog and child must be properly trained in order for the pairing to be safe.

Small children are prone to move quickly and erratically; they emit shrill sounds. These actions can stimulate a puppy's instinctive drive to `heel'. Even play bites can be painful. What is play for the puppy may be frightening for the child.

A Golden Cattle Dog can be trained that human beings are not acceptable outlets for herding and that children are part of the "human pack". Diligence must be maintained at all times when training an GCD as they are very smart and independent individuals. Children must also be taught about the instincts of a Cattle Dog and trained to properly handle your new family member.

A highly intelligent, thinking, doing breed like the GCD needs a lot of guidance to grow to be a great adult dog, much like a young child, so it is in the dog's best interest to be in a home where they have that attention ready to be given directly to them.
